In a significant move to modernize public sector technology, UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has called on global tech companies to bring their best innovations and competitive pricing to the UK. Speaking at the Google Cloud Summit in London, Kyle emphasized the potential benefits of such collaborations, stating, "In return, you'll get access to the biggest client in the country, one that will be increasingly intelligent and increasingly digital."
Kyle's proactive engagement with major tech firms like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Google has been notably more extensive than his predecessor's. Over the past six months, he has held 28 meetings with these companies, a 70% increase compared to previous efforts. This approach aims to foster innovation and enhance public services through strategic partnerships.
A key initiative announced during the summit is a partnership with Google Cloud to modernize outdated public sector systems. Currently, over 25% of public sector technology relies on legacy systems, with some sectors like the NHS and police facing up to 70% dependence on outdated technology. The collaboration seeks to revitalize these systems, potentially leading to hundreds of millions of pounds in investment and reducing the estimated £21 billion wasted on obsolete contracts.
In addition to system modernization, Kyle highlighted other advancements, including the launch of the GOV.UK app and the National Digital Marketplace. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to transform essential public services through the adoption of smart technology, aiming to improve efficiency and accessibility for citizens.
